“Each new endeavor is a creative effort building on past efforts. A good study opens the door to many new studies.” – Maxwell McCombs
Research in common parlance refers to search for knowledge. In the Cambridge International Dictionary research is referred as “a detailed study of a subject especially in order to discover new information and reach a new understanding.” L.V. Redman and A.V. H Mory in the book, The Romance of Research, 1923 defines research as a “systemized effort to gain new knowledge.” In nutshell research is a scientific and systematic search for new information on a particular topic.

The primary objective of research is to find out truth which is hidden and which has not been discovered as yet. The purpose of research is also to discover answers to questions through the application of scientific procedures.
There are four secondary objectives of research. These objectives of research go side by side with four different types of research. When the objective of research is to gain familiarity with a phenomenon or achieve new insights it is referred as exploratory or formulative research studies. Another objective of research is to portray accurately the characteristics of individuals, situation, group, community or society. This kind of research is descriptive research studies.
At times, the purpose of research is to determine the frequency with which something occurs or with which it is associated with something else. Such research is referred as diagnostic research studies. Finally, when the purpose of the research is to test hypothesis of a causal relationship between variables, it is hypothesis-testing research studies.
